It is unclear which came first: the verb or the noun. The verb is attested earlier in 1439, but attestations are not absolutes. The noun was first attested in 1490 and if it doesn't come from the verb, it probably comes from Middle Dutch
misel ("drizzling rain"), which derives from the same source word as early Modern Dutch
mieselen. That source word may also be the forebear of the verb form.
